The solution to SaaS Sprawl and Shadow IT
Industry experts Todd Thieman of Enterprise Strategy Group and LastPass Chief Product Officer, Don McLennan, break down the challenges of SaaS Sprawl, its impact on security, and how businesses can regain control with app monitoring.

SaaS Monitoring doesn’t have to be complicated or costly. By building it into the LastPass browser extension, you get instant visibility into app usage—no extra software or complex implementation. Here’s how it works:
- Enable SaaS Monitoring in seconds.
- Browser extension tracks app logins.
- See company-wide and individual app usage.

Frequently asked questions
No, LastPass would not track all the app used by employees. SaaS Monitoring reports would only show SaaS apps logins, that are matching LastPass library of SaaS applications. Personal employee login events are not recorded.
- In the back end, LastPass is building a library of SaaS applications. When business admin turns on an associated policy, and employee is filling a form or log in to a website, LastPass creates an event if the match is found. Otherwise, if this is not a SaaS app, event is not recorded. So, SaaS Monitoring won’t record an event, when employee is simply accessing Facebook during the day.
- From an end-user perspective this data is gathered through LastPass browser extension, that is already installed for every employee. So, no additional agent software is required to collect SaaS apps. Because agents might be hard to deploy, they bog down devices, while LastPass extension is a lightweight and elegant way to gather this information.
SaaS app monitoring gives you two basic reporting perspectives:
- Apps discovery dashboard
Dashboard where, you can instantly view all applications accessed across your organization: what kind of apps they are, and how they’re being accessed (SSO, passwords), including insights on usage rates, unused apps, new apps, and other risks. From that dashboard, admins can block, restrict or approve apps. - Apps users dashboard
Instantly view all employee accounts across your organization and what applications they’re associated with, including breakdown of total number of apps, security issues associated with individuals, latest login actions. This user data can be further used to communicate security and purpose concerns related to each app.
SaaS monitoring feature and policy is available for LastPass Business Max plan. It is also available during the Business 14-days trial.
